DTF Transfers

Introduction

DTF transfers have quickly become a favorite among t-shirt makers, print shops, and print-on-demand sellers. Unlike vinyl or heat-transfer sheets, DTF transfers use a special printing process where a design is printed on film, coated with adhesive powder, and heat-pressed onto fabric. These transfers produce vibrant colors, high durability, and incredible versatility.

This guide breaks down everything you need to know about DTF transfers—from how they’re made to how to apply them properly for the best results.

DTF transfers (Direct-to-Film transfers) are printed designs created using a DTF printer, PET film, and hot-melt adhesive powder. After curing, the transfer can be shipped, stored, or pressed onto almost any fabric.

Why they’re popular:

  • No pre-treatment required

  • Works on cotton, polyester, blends, denim & more

  • Long-lasting and stretch-resistant

  • Can be mass-produced and stored

1. Artwork Creation

Design is made in Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva, or Procreate.

2. RIP Software Setup

RIP software mirrors the image, applies white underbase, and manages color output.

3. Printing on PET Film

Printer lays CMYK colors first, then white on top.

4. Powder Application

Hot-melt powder is applied to the printed ink.

5. Curing

Powder melts and becomes a flexible adhesive.

6. Ready-to-Press Transfer

Transfers can be pressed immediately or stored for months.

Step-by-Step Pressing Guide

  1. Pre-press garment for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture

  2. Place transfer (ink side down)

  3. Press at 305–320°F for 10–15 seconds

  4. Allow cold peel (unless using hot peel film)

  5. Peel film slowly

  6. Press again for 3–5 seconds for durability

  • 100% cotton

  • Polyester

  • Tri-blends

  • Canvas

  • Nylon

  • Leather

  • Denim

Unlike sublimation, DTF does not require polyester.

1. Extremely Durable

Prints last 40–60 washes.

2. Works on All Fabric Types

Cotton, polyester, blends—everything.

3. No Weeding, No Pre-Treating

Huge time saver.

4. Vibrant Colors & Fine Details

Perfect for photos and gradients.

5. Batch Production Friendly

Create transfers in advance and press later.

Popular options:

  • Local print shops

  • Online sellers on Etsy

  • DTF transfer suppliers in the US, UK, and worldwide

  • Wholesale DTF manufacturers

Look for:

  • Hot-peel film

  • Vibrant color output

  • Soft, flexible feel

  • Strong adhesive

1. Use correct pressure

Medium pressure works best.

2. Allow garment to cool

Cold peel gives cleaner releases.

3. Finish press always

Locks in durability.

4. Store transfers flat and dry

Moisture can damage adhesive.

DTF transfers are one of the most versatile and profitable methods for apparel decoration today. They’re easy to use, work on every fabric type, and deliver stunning results. Whether you print your own transfers or buy them pre-made, DTF is a powerful tool for t-shirt businesses of all sizes.
